The Sheffield Chorale is a popular and friendly mixed voice choir with a high reputation in the city, and has a bright future under the auspices of Neil Taylor, who took over as Musical Director in April 2011. The choir gives consistently high quality performances of a wide range of music, including both secular and religious works. To date, Neil has led the Chorale for Bach’s B Minor Mass, Duruflé’s Requiem and Four Motets, the annual Candlelight Carol Service, and Brahms’ German Requiem and Liebeslieder Walzes. Neil is ably aided in his work with the choir by Kevin Haighton, Assistant Musical Director.
The Chorale started life in as the Radio Sheffield Choir in 1974, and was founded by James Kirkwood, who led the choir until 2005 when he retired as Musical Director, although he remains as a singer in the bass section of the choir. For more details, see our history page. The choir supports local charities through its fundraising each Christmas, and chose Amy’s House for Christmas 2011.
We are always keen to welcome new members. We currently have vacancies in all voice parts, especially Sopranos, and so if you can read music and are interested in joining the choir, contact us by email on info@sheffieldchorale.co.uk or come along to a rehearsal and try us out.
Our last concert:
We have an exciting and varied programme planned for 2012/13, including music in celebration of the Royal Jubilee, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solonnelle, and Carmina Burana. We will also be including works by Benjamin Britten, whose centenary we mark in 2013. See this page for details.
Stop Press!
The Yorkshire Libraries music collection has been saved! The collection, housed in Wakefield, was threatened with being broken up. It will now be located in Huddersfield. We added our voice to the campaign to save this valuable resource in November. More details at the Making Music website.
